Personal Statement 個人陳述: The student describes reconnecting with her love and passion for science through the wisdom of her biology teacher after a disappointing competition result left her tired and disgruntled.

Counselor’s comments 顧問評語: V took a very matter of fact approach to her academics and activities and consistently downplayed her accomplishments in both realms. As V described her commitments in each area, we encouraged her to highlight the very personal achievements that each represented. As someone not particularly gifted in athletics, her hike to the summit of Mt. Snow displayed a perseverance and commitment to self-improvement that became apparent in many facets of her life. While V possessed strong powers of description, we constantly asked her ‘why’. Why did she pursue her research in biology? Why did she persist through rigorous science competitions? During one particular conversation after explaining her research focus and discoveries in this area, we hit upon the real heart of her love for science as she described a relationship with her science teacher. This became the focal point of her personal statement as she conveyed her deep-seated love and respect for science that transcended the ups and downs of competitions and research. The exclamation points announcing her acceptance to Stanford and Columbia consumed the page as she marveled at the success we knew she could achieve all along.
