J showed her heart for the community through her description of her involvement in a rural migrant school She described designing and leading a flute camp for the migrant children and shared what these children ended up teaching her through this experience.

J was a quiet girl who was very interested in people. She liked to help people, but wasn’t always sure how or struggled to connect this with an academic interest. One of our first conversations meandered from international relations to communications to business as J expressed her interest in people along with a certain bewilderment of how to apply this to a search for a college and a major. We started by encouraging J to develop her own voice as she designed and executed a flute camp at a migrant school in her family’s hometown. J used this confidence to set high goals with regards to her school list as she aimed for the University of Chicago. She did not allow difficulty with the SAT deter her even as she called me in tears after her third SAT score below 2000. I encouraged her to focus that much harder on other components of her application even as we prepared for yet another SAT exam. We animatedly discussed her favorite book one night as we developed this response to the U Chicago short answer questions and J stayed focused regardless of test scores. J’s persistence paid off with her acceptance letter to U Chicago - her shyness vanished as she triumphantly waved her acceptance letter and giddily plopped 2 pounds of dark chocolate truffles down in front of me in wordless gratitude.

在J同學(xué)第三次SATI的成績?nèi)匀粵]能到達(dá)2000分的時候,她含著淚給我打了電話。但是考試的困難并不能阻止她申請名校的決心。我鼓勵她一邊備考下次SAT,一邊把經(jīng)歷放在申請的其他方面。為了回答芝加哥大學(xué)的申請問題,我們整個晚上都在興致勃勃地談?wù)撍矚g的一本書。J同學(xué)也暫時忘記了自己的分?jǐn)?shù)。J同學(xué)的堅持不懈得到了結(jié)果。全然不見平日害羞的她,得意地?fù)]動著芝加哥的通知書,把一個2磅重的黑巧克力松露重重地放到我面前,不需要太多感謝的語言。
